this album is probably the first maus release that i'd truly consider to be a concise, coherent release from beginning to end. it was written fairly quickly (over the course of two months or so) in my apartment right on the boardwalk in venice beach, ca. drift records (a now-defunct netlabel) had contacted me and offered to release a maus album, and i was sufficiently inspired to create this.

part of the reason i feel it gels so well as an album is the use of similar timbres across all the tracks. while i don't re-use any particular patches or specific instruments, there is similar treatment and processing on a good deal of it.

a common misconception people have about this release is that i used guitars. the truth is, there isn't so much as a single note played on a guitar anywhere on this album. i think the reason people hear guitars is the use of a good deal of distortion on synthetic pads and bass sounds throughout. i'll admit it can sound sort of guitar-like, but there are, in fact, no guitars anywhere to be found here.

roswell (track 4) is the only track that was recorded out of sequence, as it was started in my hotel room in roswell, new mexico when i drove across the country at the end of 2004.
