audiocassette reflects the basic framework underlying all maus albums that followed. it was on this album that i first really started playing around with slicing up audio that i'd generated elsewhere. this idea is most clearly demonstrated by the clicky percussion in airfax (track 2). those sounds were generated by a recording of DV and audio cassettes being tossed against a cabinet, which i then manipulated using audiomulch, and finally sliced and turned into percussive hits using NI's intakt (which they have since, sadly, discontinued.)

other standouts for me include the intro to ational (track 6) which was generated by moving a tape head (which i had removed from a walkman) across an NYC transit metro card, hence the glitchy, data-sounding character to those noises. doing this also led to the name of track 10: i broke my walkman.

incidentally, the title for track 13, waytogodallas, references the line jonesy the radar technician yells out in the later moments of 'the hunt for red october'.
